Rarity Designer SWAP 2018

I’m excited to participate for the first time in the Stitcher’s Guild’s SWAP (Sewing with a Plan) 2018 .  The theme this year is Seasonal Designer Collection and the rules (posted in detail on the site linked above) boil down to building a designer capsule wardrobe of eleven pieces using two neutrals and three accents.  Designers can choose whether to use two accent colours and one pattern (my choice) or two patterns and one colour.   The pieces need to be wearable together as a cohesive wardrobe and open the door for additions throughout the year as the seasons change.

I’m upping the ante a little, too: I’m also committed to making sure that all of the pieces I’ll be adding through this capsule will also coordinate with the rest of my wardrobe in general.  Since I make all of my own clothes, I can’t afford to spend my time on too many lonely pieces that don’t go with anything.

In recent months I’ve added just a taste of each of these to my wardrobe and I’ve really enjoyed them, so now they’re being promoted to a full-on capsule. Together, they remind me a little of Rarity Pony, hence the name. My print choice is a wonderfully loud plum-and-teal tie-dye type abstract print in a cotton flannel.  I’m pretty excited about it!

The other half of the game is to put together a set of garments that all work together: all items have to work in at least two outfits, all outfits have to have at least two pieces, and there’s a prescribed minimum number of garments that must be made with each colour.  Moreover, the SWAP director this year wants to encourage participants to develop and use  TNT (Tried-N-True) patterns as a way of producing great-fitting garments by making minor style alterations to basic patterns we’ve taken the time to fit well. This is more or less my approach anyway and I’ve been working for a few years at the fitting thing… it’s a work in progress.

So here’s what I’m thinking so far:

  • Flannel Button-Up Shirt: Butterick 5526
  • Dark-Wash Jeans (no stretch): Self-drafted from Simplicity 2700
  • Pinstripe Wool Trouser: Simplicity 2700

  • Corduroy Jeans (stretch): Self-drafted from Simplicity 2700
    • Finished: December 2017
  • Fleece Jacket: StyleArc Dorothy
  • Corduroy Straight Skirt (stretch): McCall’s 4925

  • Linen Trouser: Simplicity 2700
  • Texture-blocked shirt or shell in linen and flannel: Pattern TBD

Of course, I always reserve the right to change my mind about any of it! Check back soon to find out how it’s coming along. Thanks for joining me, and don’t forget to follow @ridinghabit on IG for more WIP photos!
